Renowned historian Professor Eugene Chiu and author of the preface of 1937: A War Begins describes the global situation in the 1930s when the author Graham Peck first visited China in this latest episode of his seminar, now just released at the Wang Jingwei & Modern China YouTube channel. The talk provides a broad yet detailed background for the events surrounding the Marco Polo Incident that changed the fate of the Far East.
Historical figures from the East to the West were discussed including Hu Shih(1891-1962), T.V. Soong (1894-1971), May-ling Soong (1897-2003) and the West such as Franklin D. Roosevelt (1882-1945), Adolf Hitler (1889-1945), bringing to life world events such as the Great Depression and the emergence of Nazism. The stage was set, said Professor Chiu, for the 1937 July 7 Second Sino-Japanese War, while the Marco Polo Incident served as the fuse that set the fire.
