Renowned Hong Kong multi-media creator Chip Tsao delivers a compelling lecture through the lens of “psychohistory” and character analysis inspired by Dream of the Red Chamber. He challenges the deep-seated habit in Chinese historiography of labeling figures with moralistic adjectives. By re-examining Wang Jingwei’s political career through the dimensions of humanity, literature, and logic, Tsao offers a fresh perspective—watch now!
A person’s character must be consistent. If you were watching a film where the protagonist is a radical patriot willing to sacrifice his life to assassinate the Prince Regent in the first half, but suddenly transforms into a treasonous collaborator in the second, there must be a coherent explanation. We must ask why and set aside preconceived political verdicts to explore the truth through human, literary, and psychological perspectives.CHIP TSAO
In this presentation, Tsao uses jailed Hong Kong dissident Benny Tai’s concept of “achieving justice through lawbreaking” as a reference point to discuss the complexities of law, emotion, and reason. He further delves into the history of Hong Kong’s shipbuilding industry and the Canton-Hong Kong Strike, offering an unconventional interpretation of the relationship between Wang Jingwei and Chiang Kai-shek through the framework of Confucian ethics (The Three Bonds and Five Constants).
Finally, he dissects the origins and political connotations of the term hanjian (traitor), sharing his provocative views on who truly deserves such a label. Don’t miss it!
The presentation was part of the Cultural Salon Series, organized by Hong Kong Kittiwake Social Service Association, and was held at the Love Hope Foundation in Taipei.
